* Can you please clarify which ‘Trending Stories’ section you are talking about? There is no Trending Posts section which automatically shows the most viewed posts.

* You can change the footer featured posts to latest posts as well as any category and any post number you like just go to Customizer > Footer Featured Posts there you can set the posts type you like to set.

You can use any image size you need, however we have used 800 by 480 pixels of image in our demo sites.

So please go to Appearance > Mobile in your WP Admin dashboard and select No for Enable mobile theme option.
If you can not figure out this option please consult to wordpress.com regarding this issue.
