i have an installation of interface pro (version 3.02), which i am trying to upgrade to 3.04. however, when i do that, i keep getting an ‘installation failed’ because the directory exists. can you please advise on how to make sure that my custom information is backed up, and give instructions about upgrading. thank you!

WordPress shows that message if you are trying to upload the same theme that is currently activate into your site.
Just activate any theme first and delete the Interface Pro theme from your theme directory and try uploading the new version of Interface Pro theme and then activate it.

Note: Make sure that you backup the previous version of Interface Pro theme for safe side if something goes wrong but if there is no any customization in the theme code you can delete it without backup.

how can i find out whether there is any customization? i don’t think that i did, but would that be in teh additional CSS field?

If you have not done any customization then you can follow the instruction to update the theme but we recommended you to backup the live site’s current version for safe side. Additional CSS will not be removed while updating theme.
