In fact I’d like a background image wherever there are these vertical grey stripes, but not in the content area which I’d like to keep white. Is this possible?

We are sorry for this. This feature that is not available in the theme. You will need to hire a developer for this customization. Before making any changes in the theme first of all create a child theme and then only customize the code.
