This might be a daft question but here goes: I started working on a website and we wanted to make it completely private. That is, only available to the Admins who could log in with passwords, and have everything else unavailable.
However, Although I could make the individual pages private, I found the Home page remained available to the public. I couldn’t figure out how to switch it off/make it private only.
I looked for a way to turn that off too, but ended up having to do the following:
1) I created a new menu as a workaround (called “Under construction” which only accessed a single page – I pointed it to a new page I added called “under construction”.
2) I also dragged the widgets off of the sidebar on the right into the inactive widgets area so they were not visible.
3) I then added a new “under construction” header.I had an idea the home page could be changed to a different page or turned off in the free version of Clean Retina, but couldn’t find the same thing in the paid version.
When my client wants to work on the site, I have to adjust the menu back to the old one, drag the widgets around and add a header with a Company logo to replace the “under construction” one.
Its doable – but its a bit of a pain.
I understand there used to be a button in WordPress to turn off public access which is no longer there. I also found a plugin called disable site but its not proven to work with the latest version of WordPress.
Essentially, My client and I want to be able to view what is on the site without the general public being able to see the home page. Additionally, I notice that the pages we mark as private give 404 errors when you access them from a phone, giving the public the impression the site is broken, when it fact it hasn’t been made fully live yet.
Any assistance you can offer me would be much appreciated. Thank you.July 11, 2016 at 11:56 am #45927Theme Horse Support TeamKeymasterHi mrgrimsdale,
This is not a theme issue. Its default WordPress core roadmap for private post and page.
The page which you have set private will show 404 error page if someone tries to view that page.
To view that page he/she must be login as administrator whether it will be phone or pc.Thank you
