Which gallery button do you mean to change? Could you provide your site Url too and make us more clear. Changing the Read More text is from go to dashboard -> appearance -> theme options -> advance options -> excerpt options and from here you can change the Read More text.

If you have customized the code without making a child theme then all your custom code will be lost. If you are making the child theme and customized the code then nothing will be lost. Relating to Custom CSS, featured images and slider if you reactivate the theme then nothing will be lost.

To add menu goto dashboard -> appearance -> menus and create a custom link. Then select the social navigation. Then your social menu will be displayed in right bottom of footer.

The slider code is inside the theme folder -> inc -> structure -> header-extension.php from line no 377 to 425
You may edit this code from there but while customising the code first of all create a child theme then only customize the code. So that your customized code will not be lost while updating to new version.
